Callas - La Damnation de Faust - D'amour L'ardente Flamme

Back

The first time I heard Callas's D'amour l'ardente flamme, I was reading Goethe's Faust in an English version. I couldn't help marvelling in my heart how Callas had captured the essence of this piece of work. Even until now, every time I listen to it, I can tell that she is more than Marguerite than Marguerite. Shy and obedient as any girl would be in that time... Though painful and hurt, she never meant to accuse her love... So tender and deeply tormented by love... at this moment she turns into that girl, or more like the girl... Sometimes it makes me wonder how Callas can portray so many different characters and make all original... The same recording also includes Charpentier's Luise "Depuis le jour", which was also said to be Callas's first French aria ever recorded (in San Remo 1954). There is certianly a lot to talk about... While Callas's Marguerite can already be "the" Romantic heroine, her "Schiller" roles are even more complicated: Elizabteh in Verdi's Don Carlos, Mathilda in Rossini's William Tell (Sombre forêt). However, she didn't put them on stage.
